Sandro Botticelli (Italian, 1444-1510)
Also known as: A. Boticello; Alessandro di Mariano Filipepi; Alexander Botticelli; Botticelli; Botticelli, Alessandro; Sandro Boticelli; Filipepi, Alessandro; Filipepi, Alessandro di Mariano di VanniBirth Place: Florence (Firenze province, Tuscany, Italy)
Sandro Botticelli (Alessandro Filipepi)is the world famed painter of the beautiful "Birth of Venus" painting. Born in Florence, Italy in 1444, this art prodigy began his journey in fine arts at the age of 14. With more art education than any other artist of that era, Botticelli mastered the intimate and detailed art manner of his mentor Fra Filippo, before going on to perfect his own style of masterful strokes, which would be admired in many masterpieces to come.
Botticelli's artworks are said to be set apart by his romantic displays of Greek mythology, Gothic realism, poetry, and humanists ideology. His artwork depicts clear contours, a focus on the models, graceful characters, and blended contrasts of light and shadow.. His most notable works include "The Life of Moses" and "Temptation of Christ" frescoes at the Sistine Chapel as well as the famed "La Primavera," "Venus and Mars," and "The Birth of Venus" paintings.
Bottecelli's following of the fanatical teachings of Savanarola can be observed in the last fifteen years of his work. During this time, it is believed his artwork began to display deeply religious and moral tones. From this period, his work includes paintings such as the "Mystic Nativity" and several Madonna and Child paintings.
1502 marked the sad end of the life of this notorious painter. But in life, Botticelli was fortunate enough to have worked with some of the most prominent families in Florence, where he left his mark as one of Florence's most favorite and highly regarded artists. Bottecelli has a longer reputation and more books written on him than any other artist of his time.
