Harry Herman Roseland (American, 1866-1950)
Paintings
Also known as: Roseland, Harry
Birth Place: New York City (New York state, United States)Biography:
A native and lifelong resident of Brooklyn, the late 19th-century painter Harry Roseland achieved acclaim and financial success for his charming depictions of African-American domestic and farm life.
While Roseland’s early genre paintings captured the sentimental relationships of upper middle-class white folks from New York, his mature paintings focused on post-Civil War blacks leading happy lives, whether picking cotton, telling fortunes, caring for children, or learning how to read and write.
Like fellow artists Winslow Homer, Richard Norris Brooke, and Edward Lamson Henry, Roseland romanticized the household and work conditions of African-Americans during Reconstruction rather than spotlighting grim realities.
