Biography:
O'Neill is best known for creating the image of the "Kewpie Doll," a plump, cupid-like child. Kewpie Dolls soon became popular as bisque figures and as the ubiquitous carnival prize, until the advent of Disney's Mickey Mouse in the 1930s. Although her "serious" paintings were exhibited in Paris and New York, the dominance of the Kewpie image likely prevented her from becoming a successful painter.
