Richard Joseph Neutra (Austrian/American, 1892-1970)

Born 8 April 1892; died 16 April 1970. Neutra studied architecture under Rudolf Saliger, Karl Mayreder and Max Fabiani at the Technische Hochshule in Vienna from 1911 to 1915 and from 1917 to 1918; he was greatly influenced by Otto Wagner and Adolf Loos. In 1919, Neutra conducted a seminar with Karl Moser at the Eidgenössische Technische Hoschule, Zürich. He worked with Gustav Amann in the offices of Werli and Staeger, with Pinner and Neumann, and with Heinrich Stanner (Berlin, 1921), and was City architect of Luckenwalde, Germany in 1921 and assistant architect in the office of Eric Mendelsohn (Berlin, 1921-23). He emigrated to the United States in 1923, and was naturalized in 1929. In the United States, Neutra was assistant architect in the office of C.W. Short and Maurice Courland in New York in 1923, and draftsman in the office of Holabird and Roche in Chicago in 1924. He worked for a few months with Frank Lloyd Wright (on Taliesin, near Spring Green, Wisconsin, 1924) and with Rudolf Schindler (Los Angeles, 1925-30). After 1925, Neutra was in private practice, in partnership with Robert E. Alexander (Los Angeles, 1949-58), and with his son Dion in Richard and Dion Neutra and Associates (Los Angeles, 1965-70).
