Nicki Marx (American , b.b. 1943)
Nicki Marx is an important counter-culture artist from the 1960’s whos career has been enjoying a recent Renaissance starting in 2014. Marx has been crafting feather wearables (collars, capes) and feather wall works of great beauty and spiritual presence for decades. In the 1960’s she became well known for her highly creative work with feathers which was collected by art luminaries such as Georgia O’Keefe and Louise Nevelson. It was an early chance encounter with a feather fly at a sporting goods store in New Mexico that led her on her life-long creative path. Marx, who was raised in Southern California found wide-spread success early in her career and was exhibited nationally in galleries and institutions, and collected widel. Rediscovered in 2014, her work has since been the subject of one-woman show “Marx: Rising” in Los Angeles at Reform Gallery, and has been featured at the LA Modernism Show, Parachute Market and FOGG Design fair. The Los Angeles County Museum has purchased a piece of Marx for their permanent collection and it will be featured in an upcoming show on 20th Century studio jewelry. A 2014 “C” Magazine’s article “Pretty Fly” notes “the rediscovery of Nicki Marx’s exquisite feathered works has captured the attention of the L.A Art community’ and in the last calendar year, multiple articles have been written about the artist including American Craft, LA Fashion Magazine, “C” California Style Magazine, and a cover article in the upcoming issue of Ornament Magazine.
