Biography:
Edvard Munch was a Norwegian painter, active in the movements of Expressionism and Symbolism. Most famous for his iconic 1893 painting, “The Scream,” Munch focused heavily on psychological and emotional themes. His conservative religious upbringing often clashed with his Bohemian lifestyle as an artist. That clash caused him considerable internal struggle, and an emotional anxiety that impacted his work in striking, visible ways. Munch frequently used colors as symbols, expressing emotions very personal to himself in ways that resonate with the viewer. Though he encountered derision early in his career, the art world began to embrace Munch around the turn of the century. In 1908, Munch was awarded Norway’s Royal Order of Saint Olav. Upon his death in 1944, Munch left his nearly complete collection of work to the City of Oslo, which currently houses the pieces in a memorial museum.
