Joan Miró (Spanish, 1893-1983)
Also known as: Ferrà, Joan Miró; Joan Miro; Miró Ferrà, Joan; Miró, Joan; Miro, Joan; Miró, Z'uán; Joán Miró
Birth Place: Barcelona (Barcelona province, Catalonia, Spain)Biography:
Joan Miró created unique works that melded the principles of modernist movements with the historical art of his native country, Spain. Miró was infatuated with art from an early age, and started art lessons while in primary school. In 1907, Miró began school at La Lonja’s Escuela Superior de Artes Industriales, and then in 1912 continued on to study at the Academie Galí.
During his time in school, his art combined influences from Fauvism, Cubism, Catalan folk art, and Spanish Romanesque church frescos. Upon completing school, Miró traveled to Paris to study the Fauvist and Cubist work that had so long influenced his pieces, and during his travels Miró was able to meet and collaborate with artists such as Pablo Picasso, Alexander Calder, and Max Ernst. Miró’s style evolved during his time in Paris, and his mature surrealistic style began to take shape. Miró’s surrealistic style became one of the most influential in the Surrealist movement, and his work inspired artists such as Mark Rothko and Adolph Gottlieb. Throughout his career, Miró continued to experiment with diverse media including book illustration, ceramics, bronze sculpture, and costume design.
