Minor White (American, 1908-1976)
Photography
Also known as: White, Minor Martin
Birth Place: Minneapolis (Hennepin county, Minnesota, United States)Biography:
An influential photographer, theoretician, critic, and teacher, White followed an independent path regardless of changing styles in the photographic world. Seeing Alfred Stieglitz’s Equivalence series was a turning point for White. The concept that a photograph could represent a state of mind or emotion led White to develop his vision of a photograph as a metaphor. He used photography as a way to express his spirituality. He also began to arrange his photographs into series that could express an entire range of thought; series that could be changed to reflect a particular mood. Photographs were tools of meditation and a path to enlightenment for White. White founded ‘Aperture’ magazine in 1952 and was its editor and a major contributor until 1975. He was an influential teacher and taught at RIT, MIT, the San Francisco Art Institute along with hundreds private and public workshops. His archive is at Princeton University.
