Michael J. and Maureen Banner (American)
Also known as: Banner Studio, Inc.Biography:
The creative collaboration of Michael and Maureen Banner has produced inspired silver creations of alluringly organic forms that visually seem to take on a life of their own. Working together as husband and wife since 1968, they developed a successful jewelry business of work in silver and gold. Then in the early 1980s occasional experiments with hollowware began, and evolved into an increasing interest over the next decades. The Banner’s projects begin conceptually with a meeting of minds. Developing ideas together, Maureen quickly sketches, followed by Bristol board models and finally their ideas take form in silver. Working together, their process is a constant refining of ideas in tandem. The teapot and its accompaniments have been their creative focus, allowing for experimentation with the individual form as well as composition of the whole. Whether solely in silver, or embellished with Maureen’s painterly manipulation of enamel, the Banner’s work always delights the eye and entices the imagination. Their work is permanently displayed in the Renwick Gallery of the National Museum of American Art of the Smithsonian Institution and the Art Institute of Chicago.
