Michael Brown (American, b.b. 1982)

Art

Also known as:  MICHAEL BROWN

Birth Place: Poughkeepsie, New York

Biography:
Michael Brown (1982 - ) was born in Poughkeepsie, New York, and as a contemporary artist he places a particular focus on his use of materials. Key to Brown’s work is the reinvention of everyday objects, transforming the seemingly ordinary and often mundane into something new that reevaluates the object’s original purpose. In addition to the ideals behind minimalism, Brown’s work strongly reflects the influence of avant-garde artist Marcel Duchamp’s readymades.

After graduating with his bachelor’s in fine arts from SUNY New Paltz in 2006, Brown quickly spearheaded into the contemporary art world. By the time he was only twenty-five years old, he was already exhibiting at the Yvon Lambert Gallery and Zwirner & Wirth, among other reputable galleries.

His career has not slowed down since, participating in various group exhibitions at venues such as Columbus College of Art and Design, Columbus, OH; Perry Rubenstein Gallery, New York; Hudson Valley Center for Contemporary Art, Peekskill; Yellow Bird Gallery, Newburgh; and the Dorsky Center for Curatorial Studies, New York.

One of his series includes eight works involving hand-cut, polished stainless steel, recreated into a broken mirror. Brown began work on the series in 2006 and began exhibiting the pieces with the Yvon Lambert Gallery in 2007. Although he spent long, exhaustive hours of physical labor with the steel to achieve his sense of perfection, the result appears far from perfect. Rather, the material seems to appear shattered, making debatable the reflective purpose of the mirror.

In reference to this steel series, Brown states “Stainless steel to me is a modern material that represents strength and efficiency….I like to think I’m embarrassing the material with my own labor.”

Many important collections around the world contain Brown’s work, including The Beth Rudin deWoody Permanent Collection in New York; The Hudson Valley Center for Contemporary Art in Peekskill, New York; the Rennie Collection in Vancouver, Canada; and the collection of Sherry and Joel Mallin in New York. Brown’s work has been reviewed with critical acclaim in The New York Times, Artforum, and Time Out New York. He currently lives and works in Long Island, New York.
