Lui Liu (Chinese, b.b. 1957)
Paintings
Biography:
Lui Liu was born in 1957 in North China, where he developed his artistic skills as a young boy painting posters on the streets at the time of China's Cultural Revolution. He was one of the first group of students since the end of this period in China to study at the Central Academy of Fine Arts. In 1991, Liu moved to Canada where he still lives today, and through separating himself during a shift in the artistic mainstream of China, he is able to provide a uniquely powerful perspective of the two worlds, which allows him to create works of art that appeal to a wide audience. His paintings are known for depicting surreal and absurd images, executed in such a realistic manner with a masterful technique that his paintings often cause the viewer a sense of intrigue filled with unease. Like other surrealist painters, Liu uses his dreams as a means for revealing the seemingly obscure line between what is real and what is imagined or dreamt. What sets him apart is his incredible imagination combined with his use of metaphor with stunning figural portrayals. Liu continues to this day to impress his viewer with his incredible surreal works of art.
