Annie Leibovitz (American, b.b. 1949)
Birth Place: Westport (Fairfield county, Connecticut, United States)
One of the greatest living artists in the United States today is Annie Leibovitz, who is primarily known for her stunning photographs of major celebrities. Many know her because of the photographs she took of John Lennon and Yoko Ono, just hours before he was shot and killed. The photo of a naked John Lennon apparently clinging to a fully-clothed Yoko has become an iconic symbol to fans.
Because of her unique flair and experience working with celebrities, Leibovitz was hired by Vanity Fair magazine in the 1980’s. She photographed celebrities in interesting poses, really pushing the envelope and challenging viewers. For example, one cover featured a very pregnant Demi Moore naked and yet another, later, showed Demi Moore naked with a suit painted over her body.
Leibovitz has won many awards, including a Clio in 1987. Just last year, she was given the prestigious Prince of Asturias Award for Communication. She was the first woman to have a show at the National Portrait Gallery.
Leibovitz has had her work published in books. Her first, Annie Leibovitz: A Photographer’s Life, 1990-2005 included pictures of famous people as well as friends and family. Liebovitz was hired to transform celebrities into fantastic Disney characters. For instance, pictures of Taylor Swift as Rapunzel and Jessica Chastain as Princess Merida bring Disney characters to life in amazing detail.
Leibovitz has three children. She had her first baby at the age of 52. Her younger children were carried by surrogate. Leibovitz was in a long-term relationship with Susan Sontag. The pair was together until Sontag’s death in 2004.
