Lee (Norman) Friedlander

Lee (Norman) Friedlander

Nationality: American

Birth Place: aberdeen, Maryland

Friedlander studied photography with Edward Kaminski at the Art Center Scholl in Los Angeles from 1953 – 1955. He was a free-lance photo-journalist working for Esquire, McCall’s Collier’s and Art in America, among others. He is the recipient of three Guggenheims; five NEA grants; and numerous awards including the coveted MacArthur Foundation Award in 1990. He is an integral part of every photography collection, both public and private and his work is in the Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Museum of Fine Arts Boston, The Fogg, The Smithsonian, the Victoria and Alpert and the National Gallery of Art in Ottawa, to name a few.

“The apparent eclecticism of his subject matter is an index of his assurance and versatility. With a small, hand-held camera and a hawk’s eye for the un-noticed, he has forged an unmistakable style. Though easeful on the viewer’s eyes; Friedlander’s photographs are difficult and original in conceptions. …He has created a rich and diverse lexicon of urban America.” Kelly Wise, Encyclopedia of 20th century photography / Routledge.
