A portraitist and landscapist from Michigan, Lawton S. Parker numbered among the Giverny Luminists, a group of early 20th-century American painters who fell under the spell of Claude Monet and worked near his studio. Parker was a committed student and trained at the Art Institute of Chicago, Académie Julian in Paris, Art Students League in New York, and École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. His famous instructors included the academics William-Adolphe Bouguereau and Jean-Léon Gérôme and the Impressionists William Merritt Chase and James McNeill Whistler, and his signature style reflected a synthesis of academic, true-to-life coloration and Impressionist fractured brushwork. In 1913 Parker became the first American to win the coveted Gold Medal at the Paris Salon. His paintings can be seen at the Art Institute of Chicago and Los Angeles County Museum of Art, among other American museums.
