Jules Alexandre Grün (French, 1868-1934)
Also known as: Grun, Jules Alexandre; Grün, Jules-AlexandreBiography:
The late 19th-century French artist Jules Alexandre Grün is best known for his Art Nouveau posters, similar to those by Jules Cheret or Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, which employ bold letting and coloring and stylized figures. Whether designing for an automobile exposition in Monaco, the Society of Painter-Lithographers, or Paris's train stations and lively café concerts and theaters, Grün favored the female figure - smiling, voluptuous, and fashionable -- as the focal point of the advertisement. Outside of his commercial work, Grün was a distinguished Salon painter who imaged floral still lifes and conservative realist portraits of women in interiors.
Although he was the recipient of prestigious academic awards, a member of the committee and jury of the Salon, and a Chevalier of the Légion d'Honneur, Grün preferred the world of illustration and design. A regular at the Chat Noir cabaret in Montmartre, he produced decorative panels for the Taverne de Paris, contributed to theater and art magazines, and created silhouettes for shadow-puppet theaters.
