John William Casilear (American, 1811-1893)

Paintings

Also known as:  Casilear, John W.

Biography:
A leader in the Hudson River School Luminist movement, Casilear found his muse in the landscapes of upstate New York and New Hampshire, notably the Genesee Valley near Rochester. During the 1840s while on a trip to Europe, Casilear's friend and mentor Asher B. Durand introduced him to the paintings of the Baroque master Claude Lorrain, who became a lasting influence, particularly with his soft light and billowing clouds. Casilear's hallmark detailed rendering of foreground objects points to his early training as an engraver. In general, his vision reflects that of the second generation of Hudson River School painters, where nature, no longer unruly and dangerous, has conformed to man's needs.
