Biography:
John Everett Scofield, an accomplished craftsmen-designer, has had an extensive and impressive career. He's designed everything from chairs to tables, landscape pieces to benches. Scofield learned about woodworking while growing up in Greenwich, CT through an architect he knew that had been trained at Harvard, who encouraged him to step into furniture design. Later, Scofield studied at the School for American Craftsmen, Rochester Institute of Technology. It was here that he first designed and constructed his celebrated piece, "Folding Music Stand," as a gift for a friend's relative in exchange for a belt buckle. Beautifully crafted, the piece is often described as "elegant," and features fine curves and a modern, streamlined take on the popular design of most music stands. "Folding Music Stand" is permanently on display at the Museum of Modern Art in their design collection.

From 1972 to 1973, Scofield was able to apprentice to another craftsmen-designer, Wendell Castle, who is widely considered to have been the father of the art furniture movement. In 1975, Scofield was the studio assistant of Robert Motherwell, a noted abstract expressionist painter and printmaker of the era who was the youngest in the New York School of artists, an informal collective of poets, musicians, dancers, and painters. Motherwell kept one of Scofield's pieces, "Colored Chair," in his library until he died in 1991.

When he's not designing furniture, Scofield enjoys painting. He has developed his own method in which he paints a series of solid colors in order to, as he says, "capture the feeling of an entire life, geographical area, aspect of nature--whatever the subject is--in a handful of colors that communicate with each other." The brightly colored modern paintings are done as small-scale prints.

Scofield has had collections in the Museum of Modern Art, New York as well as the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, Richmond and Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego.

In 2008, Scofield married style entrepreneur Bartley Johnstone who owns a fashion boutique, B. Johnstone in Kent, CT. They live in Connecticut with their five-year-old daughter, Everett Inge "Evie" Scofield. He also has a son named Jackson who attends college.
