John Nyquist (American , b.b. 1936)

Fine woodworker John Nyquist was born into a second generation Swedish American family in South Dakota, and moved to Long Beach as a teenager after his Physician father returned from World War II. A respected California maker, Nyquist has captured the attention of collectors with his fine made-to-order furniture since 1959. With influences of Shaker furniture, Charles and Henry Green, Scandinavian design and even sculptor Henry Moore, Nyquist has created a repertoire of fine craftsmanship and design in his own woodworking studio. This is evident in his nimble ability to hone in on the beauty of each wood he uses, most commonly black walnut, Brazilian rosewood and Makassar ebony, as well as his use of lush leather and wool upholstery. As typical with most California “Roundover Movement” artists, this most respected West Coast master does not varnish his work so there is nothing that separates you from the exquisite hand carved and polished surfaces. His work was included in many of the seminal “California Design” exhibits held at the Pasadena Art Museum from 1964-1976. Like his contemporary Sam Maloof, Nyquist work is in numerous important Design collections in California, and across the country.
