Johann Till (Austrian, 1827-1894)
Paintings
Biography:
The Austrian painter Johann Till specialized in history paintings of medieval knights and monks, which romanticized themes of chivalry, brotherhood, and conquest. Till learned the principles of draftsmanship and color from his father, the academic painter Johann Till the Elder, and he later studied the Old Masters at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna. Records indicate that he further honed his craft in Italy, Düsseldorf, and France before opening a studio in Vienna in 1877. While a handful of Till's paintings fall into the category of contemporary genre scenes, showing Austrian children frolicking in snowy landscapes, most imagine heroic or contemplative life in the Middle Ages. Till excelled in still-life and figure painting, and he loved animals. His scenes of knights returning from battle or being greeted by monks in a monastery almost always feature his signature dogs and fowl in the foreground.
