Jim Norton (American, b.b. 1953)
Birth Place: Santaquin (Utah county, Utah, United States)
Jim Norton is an American painter who was born in Price, Utah, in 1953. Norton was exposed to the arts at a young age through family members such as well-known artists, Earl Fausett, his grandfather, and Lynn and Dean Fausett, his cousins. Norton began his formal arts education in high school, and continued into college. He attended Western Wyoming College, and Brigham Young University where he studied under Conrad Schwiering. He later traveled to Perth, Australia, on a church mission, where he stayed for two years and continued his informal training in painting. His informal education also includes trips to museums in Canada, the United States, and Russia.
Norton is known for his work in western art. His father was a miner, so as a child, Norton traveled throughout the western states, and the scenes of the west he experienced through these travels heavily influenced his work. His work depicts both past and present life in the west by telling a story. His experiences with Native Americans and cowboys, are expressed in his creations, and his oil paintings capture the lives of ranchers. The colors and strokes he uses in his paintings, are bold, confident, and precise. His biggest influence has been the pack trips he takes into the mountains.
Norton is a member of the Northwest Rendezvous Group, and he has been a member of the Cowboy Artists of America, since 1989. In 1986, he was given the Juror's Choice Award. He received the Kickhefer Award in 2001, for the best in show. In 2010, he received a Stetson CAA Award, and a Gold Medal for Oil Painting for The Lifetime. Some of Jim Norton's recent paintings include Strangers in the Valley, Fading Light on Bridger Butte,Buffalo Coat, and The Fall Hunt.
Norton still lives in Utah with a wife and four children.
