Jerry Farnsworth (American, 1895-1983)
Much like his mentor Charles Hawthorne, Georgia native Jerry Farnsworth was a noted art instructor and painter of earth-toned, expressionistic, and richly impastoed portraits and still lifes. Before working with Hawthorne in Provincetown, Farnsworth studied at the Corcoran Art School in Washington, D.C. The paintings he exhibited at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Carnegie Institute, and Toledo Museum of Art garnered favorable attention in his early career. Farnsworth was a teacher at heart, and in 1933 he established the Farnsworth School of Art with two locations, one in North Truro, Massachusetts, and the other in Sarasota, Florida. Today his paintings can be viewed at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Philadelphia; Museum of Modern Art, New York; and Whitney Museum of American Art, New York.
