Born in 1901, Prouvé was born into a creative family that had helped found the Art Nouveau School of Nancy, in which beautiful, sinuous examples of glass, furniture and ceramics flowed. He had trained as a blacksmith’s apprentice from the age of 15, which gave him a firm understanding of the medium as he returned from military service in 1923 and he set up his own workshop. Through the late 1920’s and 30’s, Prouvé introduced new equipment in his shop that enabled him to create sturdy but light weight metal furniture in agreeance with the style Le Corbusier and Robert Maller-Stevens. His practical designs were geared towards the betterment of the public sector, which reflected Prouvé’s social ideals about how design is a moral issue. In contrast from him father, Prouvé fabricated modular, morally correct furniture, fixtures and prefabricated houses that were not idealized and fanciful, but practical.
Prouvé’s most beloved designs include the Potence lamp, the Compas desk and his array of sensible prefabricated homes and building.
