Jasper Johns (American, b.b. 1930)

Paintings

Biography:
Jasper Johns is a modern American painter and printmaker who was born in Augusta, Georgia in 1930. He began drawing at an early age, and by the time he was five he had already made up his mind to become an artist. After studying for several semesters at the University of South Carolina at Columbia, he decided to move to New York in order to pursue his career.

Johns began taking classes at the Parsons School of Design before his studies were interrupted by the Korean War. He served two years in the army and then returned to New York, where he met several other artists who were to have a profound impact on his life and career. He worked with Robert Rauschenberg, the composer John Cage and choreographer Merce Cunningham and developed new theories of art.

Johns is best known for his interpretations of the American flag. His most famous work is entitled Flag, which is an oil and collage on fabric. Johns also created multimedia works using maps, letters, numbers and other images from the everyday world. His work is usually categorized as Pop Art, and he is one of the most influential artists of this movement. Along with contemporaries such as William de Kooning, Jackson Pollock and Andy Warhol, Johns helped to define Pop Art.

In addition to his paintings, Johns is also known for his sculptures and prints. He has collaborated with artists in different media, such as theater, music and dance. He was one of the founders of The Foundation of Contemporary Performance Arts. Johns currently lives in Connecticut and continues to produce art. His painting False Start has the distinction of being the most expensive work by a living artist after selling for $80 million.
