He’s won seven Eisner awards (three as a cover artist), three Harvey Awards, two gold and a silver medal from the Society of Illustrators of Los Angeles, and one gold medal from the Society of Illustrators of New York. His poster art has been used for The Shape of Water, Blade Runner 2049, and the Darren Aronofsky film, mother! What kind of art does James Jean make?
Up until 2008, James Jean was best known for his comic art and commercial illustration work. Since that date, Jean has moved on from these mediums to focus on painting. These pieces are far removed from Jean’s previous work, with layered compositions that walk the thin veil between the waking world and the dreaming one. His art pulls on disparate influences, from Baroque paintings to Japanese woodblock prints to Chinese silk scroll painting techniques. His command of the form is impressive, and a natural evolution from his earlier work in comics and commercial illustration.
How did painter James Jean get started?
James Jean was born in Taiwan in 1979 but soon immigrated to New Jersey with his family. Early in his life, Jean focused on music -- with early success playing the piano and trumpet. Eventually, he turned to visual arts, graduating from the School of Visual Arts in New York in 2001. Almost immediately upon graduation, Jean received work as a cover artist for both DC Comics and Marvel Comics. Some of his most notable series from that time include Fables and The Umbrella Academy -- both of which would net him a total of six Eisner awards for Best Cover Artist. In 2008, Jean decided to retire from illustration so that he could focus on painting, a practice that he continues to this day.
