Jack Goldstein (American, 1945-2003)

Birth Place: Montreal (Québec province, Canada)

Who is Jack Goldstein? Some might refer to him as a forgotten treasure, but fortunately for the world of art, his contributions don't suffer if his name is unknown by many. Born September 27th, 1945 in Montreal, Canada, he moved to Los Angeles, California in the 60's where he attended high school. This it gave him the opportunity to receive training at Chouinard Art Institute and earn a BFA and then become a member of the inaugural class at the California Institute of the Arts. It was here that he worked under John Baldessari in post-studio art and then earned his MFA (1970-1972). This marked Goldstein's roots in minimalist sculpture and conceptualism. From here, Goldstein transitioned into Performance and Filmography. A couple of his most famous films include "Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer," which depicts the lion roaring consecutively, and "Some Plates." Though his work speaks for itself, after this stage, he moved into a sort of obsession with painting, presumably sparked by a lack of financial success; he took ordinary photographs and changed them, sometimes taking away a logical piece to emphasize a concept. Some say his painting phase was him deciding to sell-out; he was still, however, not a big success. And this lack of success made him drop off the map for a while when he moved to the California desert. Here he stayed for over a decade, which is when his work began picking up hype. But despite this, Goldstein wasn't happy, and on March 14th, 2003, he committed suicide just outside his home.
