Howard Hodgkin (British, 1932-2017)

Paintings

Birth Place: London, UK

Biography:

Who was painter Howard Hodgkin?

Howard Hodgkin was a painter and printmaker who primarily worked in abstract styles, characterized by thick swaths of acrylic paint. He often spent years working on the surface of a single painting, and was relatively late to the art scene -- not even mounting a solo show until he was in his thirties. While he was late to the professional art scene, his presence was extremely dominant for the rest of the twentieth century.

A darling of critics and the art-buying public, Hodgkin won the Turner Prize and saw his reputation rise, until his contemporaries included such luminaries as David Hockney and Lucian Freud. He mounted exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art in Oxford, the MoMa in New York, and the famed Tate gallery. He was knighted by the Queen of England in 1992 and received several honorary degrees including ones from the London Institute and the University of Oxford.

What kind of art did Howard Hodgkin make?

Howard Hodgkin made colorist paintings that were famed for their intense, brilliant colors and laborious process. Hodgkin could often take years to prepare a canvas. That said, his paintings exude a kind of casual, easy-going nature that belies the work put into them. He often used flat, geometric shapes, saturating a canvas with thick, rich colors of oil. While his pieces continually evolved over the course of his artistic career, he never strayed from these processes or materials. Hodgkin got every ounce he could from his canvas, the results speak for themselves. Every Hodgkin painting feels rich to the eyes and rich to the soul.

How did painter Howard Hodgkin get started?

Howard Hodgkin was born in Hammersmith, a small suburb of London to a manager of a chemical company and a botanical illustrator. Hodgkin’s early life was spent without note, observing plants and local wildlife. During World War II, Hodgkin worked as an RAF officer and worked in the propaganda campaign against Nazi Germany. Once the war was over, he studied at Eton College but was unsatisfied by the route his studies would take. He enrolled at the Camberwell Art School, then later at the Bath Academy of Art in Corsham.

How much are Howard Hodgkin paintings worth?

Howard Hodgkin’s paintings can be worth anywhere from tens of thousands of dollars up to1 mil or more. While he didn’t enjoy the fame of some of his contemporaries like Hockney, Hodgkin’s paintings are still very in-demand in the art world and command astounding prices at auction.
