Hiro (American, b.1930)
Also known as: Yasuhiro WakabayashiBiography:
Hiro (Yasuhiro Wakabayashi) (Japanese/American, b. 1930) was born in Shanghai to Japanese parents. Often described as a “photographer’s photographer,” Hiro's surreal and elegant work in fashion and still life photography has been an influential vision in the fashion field from the mid-sixties onward. Hiro apprenticed in the studio of Lester Bookbinder and Reuben Samberg, and in 1956, he began working for famed fashion photographer Richard Avedon. Hiro also connected with Alexey Brodovitch, art director at Harper's Bazaar, and worked as his assistant during the period of Brodovitch's involvement with the Design Laboratory at the New School. By late 1957, Hiro had established his own independent career and was soon touted as a star fashion photographer due to his oustanding contributions as a Harper's mainstay from 1956-1975. In 1969 Hiro was named Photographer of the Year by the American Society of Magazine Photographers. Hiro's photographs are noted for their elegant surrealism, and a unique aesthetic that is executed with a captivating precision. As a result, American Photographer devoted an entire issue to him in 1982
