Gilbert Rohde (American, 1894-1944)

Art

Biography:
Rohde was the beginning of modern furniture design at Herman Miller, he had argued with the founder, Dirk Jan De Pree, that the then current furniture was antiquated and immoral. His argument won him a contract with Herman Miller, the company mass produced his modern designs that often incorporated industrial materials, like Plexiglas, Bakelite and Lucite, as well as exotic woods. His work was centralized around the new compact household that required multifunctional and modular furniture with a clean, simple aesthetic. Rohde suddenly passed away two weeks after his fiftieth birthday from a massive heart attack.
