Photography

Also known as:  George A. Tice; Tice, George; Tice, George Andrew

Birth Place: Newark, NJ USA

Biography:

Who is photographer George Tice?

George Tice is an American photographer, best known for his landscape and urban environment prints. His work often features his native New Jersey, where he has lived almost the entirety of his life. His prints often feature a depth of humanity and warmth not often associated with urban landscape photography. This has made Tice something of a rarity. Tice has been in the public eye for years, his first retrospective was when he was just 37 years old. Tice continues to produce work, promote the work of Steichen (one of his mentors and greatest influences), and work in the world art community.

Tice has been a favorite of art and photography critics since the 1960s when the New York Times wrote a piece on his underground gallery. He’s been awarded several major awards including The Frank Roy Fraprie Medal (1964) an NEA Fellowship (1973), a Guggenheim Fellowship (1973), a Fellowship from the National Museum of Photography, Film, and Television, and a fellowship from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts. His work appears in galleries all over the world.

What kind of art does George Tice make?

George Tice makes atmospheric and darkly beautiful prints of American Life and the urban environment of New Jersey. His work owes much to other photographic luminaries of the 20th century like Steichen (a friend), but his aesthetics and eye are completely his own. In more recent years, Tice has branched out into literature, giving readings, writing books, and teaching in the summer at the workshops for Maine Media Workshops. His pieces can be stark, but are often filled with a warmth and depth of humanity that make him popular with fans of photography around the world. He is one of the greatest living photographers, in America or anywhere else in the world.

How did photographer George Tice get started?

George Tice was born in Newark, New Jersey on October 13th, 1938 to a middle-class family. From an early age, Tice loved looking at family photographs and began taking his own photos sometime in the late 1940s. In 1953, after upgrading to the then-brand-new Kodak Pony, Tice was able to have more control over his exposure and focus -- a huge turning point in his development as an artist. He joined the Carteret Camera Club and began photographing homeless men on the Bowery. This won him second place in a black and white print competition. He attended the Newark Vocational and Technical High school in 1955, but quit school at the age of 16 to work at a photography studio. After a stint in the Navy, Tice returned to New Jersey in the late 1950s. His professional career began in earnest after Edward Steichen took a piece of Tice’s that the New York Times had published to include in the MoMA’s photography collection.

How much are George Tice photographs worth?

George Tice photographs can be worth anywhere from a few hundred dollars to several thousand dollars for popular works. The most ever paid for a George Tice photograph is $13,750 for the print, Petit’s Mobil Gas Station, Cherry Hill, New Jersey (1974) which sold on April 4th, 2020 from Heritage Auctions. This amount is consistent with what we know of Tice’s work, this same piece has been sold and resold over the past decade for increasingly high amounts, nearly doubling from its sale in 2014 -- only six years earlier.
