Born 8 January 1869; died 9 August 1942. Emigrated to San Francisco, California in 1895. From 1897 to 1906, Genthe operated a studio in the Chinese district of San Francisco, California. From 1902 to 1911, Genthe operated another studio in Carmel, California. Genthe photographed the 1906 earthquake and fire in San Francisco, California. He also operated a portrait studio in New York City, New York from 1911 to 1942. Genthe became a naturalized American citizen in 1918. In 1925, Genthe photographed the architecture of New Orleans, Louisiana. He also worked as a freelance magazine photographer and was associated with the California Camera Club.
