Biography:Funke was born in Bohemia and attended the' French Lyzeum' in Grenoble, later studying medicine and then law in Prague. He had taken photographs from the age of twelve and in 1922 focused on photography in earnest. His photographs were published in the Swiss magazine 'Camera' and from that point on his work was regularly exhibited internationally. In 1924 he co-founded, with Joseph Sudek, the Czech Photographic Society. A respected teacher, artist and commercial photographer, he is considered to be one of the leading figures, along with Sudek, of Czech avant-garde photography. "His articles, lectures and photographs witness the variety of his interests, making Funke one of the most demanded personalities of cultural life in Prague." He died in 1945 from a perforated intestine that could not be attended to on account of a four-hour air-raid alarm.
