Frank Stella is an American-born painter, printmaker and abstract sculptor. His work is mostly found in the areas of post-painterly abstraction and minimalism. He was born in Malden, Massachusetts on May 12, 1936. He became active in the art world in the late 1950s and continues to be active today. Stella attended high school at the Phillips Academy in Andover and was a history major at Princeton. His visits to New York galleries inspired him, and he was influenced especially by the abstract expressionism of Franz Kline and Jackson Pollock. Some of his most famous works include a 1984 piece made with oil, enamel paint on canvas which is etched with magnesium, aluminum and fiberglass. It is called La sciena della pigriza or The Science of Laziness. It is currently on display at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. His large metal sculpture, Memantra, is on display at the Metropolitan Museum of Art Roof Garden in New York City. It was during the 1990s that Stella began creating free standing sculptures. He is responsible for the entire decorative scheme in Toronto's Princess of Wales Theater. The building includes a 1,000 square foot mural. He's also had exhibitions at Guggenheim and was the subject of retrospectives in Europe, the United States and Japan. Stella is also a tireless advocate for the protection of artists. He works to protect their copyrights by organizing against those who knowingly infringe on them. He has also received numerous awards including a National Medal of Arts presented by President Obama and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the International Sculpture Center. Stella currently resides in New York City.
