Frank Stella (American, b.b. 1936)
Birth Place: Malden (Middlesex county, Massachusetts, United States)
Frank Stella is an American printmaker and painter, who was born in 1936 in Malden, Massachusetts. He currently works and lives in New York, which is where he moved to in 1958. Frank Stella is best known for his work influenced by minimalism and color field painting. He continues to be influenced by hard-edge painting, abstract illusionism, lyrical abstraction, and abstract expressionism.
While majoring in history at Princeton University, Stella met artists including Darby Bannard and Michael Fried who had lasting effects on his work and style. After college, his work in abstract expressionism was also greatly influenced by the work of artists Jackson Pollock and Franz Kline. Stella often used experimental materials use as copper and aluminum paint and uncommonly shaped canvases. In the 1960s, Stella started practicing printmaking, and introduced a new technique called offset lithography.
Today, Frank Stella continues to gain recognition and influence the art world, including his participation in protecting the rights of artists. In 2008, he published an Op-Ed for The Art Newspaper, which encouraged removing a copyright penalty if the owner of a work could not be found. He was given National Medal of Arts by President Barack Obama in 2008. He has exhibited much of his work in galleries, including a 2012 showing at the Kunstmuseum Worfsburg. As of 2014, his sculpture, Adjoeman, sits in Los Angeles at the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.
