Frank Lloyd Wright

Art

Also known as Rait, Frank Lloid; Rayt, Frank Luyd; Frank Lloyd Lincoln Wright

Nationality: American

Birth Place: Richland Center (Richland county, Wisconsin, United States)

Biography:
Frank Lloyd Wright wore many hats: interior designer, writer, even educator. However, his most notable and recognized "hat" was his work in the field of architecture. Wright's works spanned from modern, gravity-defying structures like Fallingwater— a tiered, angular home perched atop a waterfall—to more classical Queen Anne-influenced works like the Walter Gale House— a house covered in neatly laid brick reminiscent of castles and kingdoms of old. Wright's work drew inspiration from a wide variety of sources and went through many phases. His body of work includes prairie-style houses, textile block houses, and later a mature organic style that included Usonian houses. His use of zinc cames, precast concrete blocks, and glass bricks were innovative for his time, as was his use of glass as a means of incorporating "life". A student (and later honorary graduate) of University of Wisconsin, Madison, Wright soon found himself influenced by his colleagues Joseph Lyman Silsbee and Louis Sullivan. He seemed to go wherever his work took him, as his structures can be found in California, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Illinois, and many other places. Scottsdale, Arizona seemed to be his "home base" of sorts, and a source of inspiration to him throughout his career. Wright considered himself a staunch individualist; as such, he had no notable art organization memberships, although he was made an honorary member by many organizations. One particular example of his attitude towards the arts and his career is a notable quote in which an associate referred to him as "an old amateur” and he responded, "I am the oldest." Due to the nature of his work, of course, Wright's "pieces" can't be held in a museum. They are themselves the museum. Some properties still hold his original furniture and other decorative elements, while others have replaced them with casted replicas.
