Eyvind Earle (American, 1916-2000)
Birth Place: California (United States)
Eyvind Earle was born in Manhattan, New York, April 26,1916, and died in Carmel, California, July 20, 2000, age 84. Eyvind Earle is best known for his work for Walt Disney, which included designing and painting backgrounds for Sleeping Beauty, part of Lady and the Tramp, and other films. His artistic career included drawings, paintings in watercolor, oil, and other media, many different forms of printmaking, greeting cards, sculpture, animation, film, poetry, autobiography and other writing. His art is popular in the US and even more popular in Japan.
Eyvind’s father did not allow him to play with other children and instead challenged him, at 10 years old, to either read 50 pages of a book or do a painting every day. Eyvind did both. At 14 he had his first one man art show in France. At 21 he bicycled from Hollywood, to New York, painting and selling 42 watercolors to support himself and writing a 10,000 word diary along the way. He had numerous one man shows in many art galleries, and his work hangs in museums and in many personal collections. Earle's early work was realistic, but by the time he was 21, he had developed his own style, simple, strong stylized but recognizable forms and fantastic landscapes. His skilled use of light and dark, intense color and elegant drawing continues to influence artists today. His art is not merely decorative, although there are decorative elements; the work is strong, and the use of line and color convey mood and emotion.
