Erté
Also known as: Erte
Biography:Known by the pseudonym Erté, Romain de Tirtoff (Nov. 23 1892 – Apr. 21 1990) was a Russian-born French artist and designer. He broke his family’s tradition of pursuing a career in the Russian Navy and moved to Paris as a young adult. His career in design promptly took off when he began working for Harper’s Bazaar. After decades of focusing on apparel, interior design, and posters for theatre, he expanded his work into the field of wearable art. The renewed interest in Art Deco in the sixties led to a career revival for Erte. Since his death in 1990, several well-known museums have continued to showcase his work. Today, the Erté name lives on through the jewelry line, with the motto “Art to Wear.”
