Ernest Albert (American, 1857-1946)
Birth Place: Brooklyn (Delaware county, New York state, United States)
Active in New York, St. Louis, and Chicago, Ernest Albert was a distinguished Impressionist landscape painter, muralist, and set designer. His landscapes of Old Lyme, Connecticut, of Monhegan Island, Maine, and of the West Coast, while compositionally simple, impart a powerful sense of mood. Albert utilized misty light and a tonal palette of blues, greys and whites in his winter landscapes, effectively evoking an otherworldly atmosphere. The Wadsworth Athenaeum Museum of Art, Hartford; Colby College Museum of Art, Waterville, Maine; and the Florence Griswold Museum, Old Lyme, feature some of Albert’s finest landscapes.
