Ellsworth Kelly (American, 1923-2015)
Ellsworth Kelly was born in Newburgh, New York in 1923. Today, he lives and works in Spencertown, NY. A well renowned American painter, sculptor, and print maker, Kelly is known for his simplicity of form and hard-edged painting.
As a child, Kelly's paternal grandmother introduced him to bird watching. He contributes this hobby to developing his appreciation for physical reality by training his eyes to focus on the variety of shapes in nature.
Kelly's interest in art continued through his school career. While his parents did not fully support his art training, his teachers encouraged him to continue his artist ventures.
As a young man, Kelly served in the army where he was exposed to military camouflage, which became part of his basic art training. He was also a member of the Ghost Army. Along with other serving artists and designers, the Ghost Soldiers mislead axis forces by using inflatable tanks and other elements to make determining location and directions of allied forces difficult.
Kelly used his G.I. Bill to pay for his education at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. He also studied in Paris, where he soaked in and used the rich artistic resources of the city to further his artist talent.
Many of Kelly's works are in public collections and considered extremely valuable. Some of his famous artwork include his sculpture Curve IV, which is part of his private collection, and oil paintings, such as White Disk III and Spectrum of Colors Arranged by Chance.
