Elliott Erwitt is best known as an advertising and documentary based photographer, with his most famous shots coming in black and white form. Between the late 1940s and the 1970s, Elliott Erwitt became known as one of the very best photographers of his generation. With his content that has been published throughout the world, the Russian born photographer, who now currently lived in the United States, has been taking pictures for the better part of 80 years.
As a photographer, Elliott Erwitt is known for some rather popular photos of the United States. His first rise to fame came in 1946, where he took street level shots of women's feet and compared them to that of a chihuahua. While this introduced him to the advertising world, his picture known as Segregated Water Fountains in North Carolina began to grow Elliott Erwitt's knack for producing documentary based photography, including later photographs that he captured throughout the 1950s, all the way up into the 1970s.
While Elliott Erwitt is best known for photography, he has produced several movies and even books of his photography. He directed several different movies, including Glassmakers of Herat, Afghanistan, which he did in 1977. He also worked as the photographer for the documentary Bob Dylan: No Direction Home. Some of his books include Photographs and Anti-Photographs, which he released in 1972, Observations on American Architecture, which he released the same year, and Recent Developments, in 1978.
While he was born in 1928 in Russia, he currently lives inside of the United States in New York City.
