Edouard Cortes Painting Values

Who was painter Edouard Cortes?

Edouard Cortes was a Post-Impressionist painter best known for his many and varied works of Parisian cityscapes. At a time when Paris was the literal center of the art world, Cortes was able to soak up knowledge and technique from masters of the craft. During his lifetime, his paintings were highly regarded by collectors and especially visitors to the City of Lights.

Edouard Cortes was active in his hometown at the Union des Beaux-Arts de Lagny, becoming the union’s first president in the 1920s. He received several awards during his life and participated in the important exhibitions of Paris including Salon d’Hiver, Salon de la Societe Nationale de l’Horticulture, and the Salon des Independants. His works were first exhibited in the United States in 1945 to great success.

What kind of art did Edouard Cortes make?

Edouard Cortes painted rich and vibrant cityscapes as well as tranquil scenes of the countryside and his work appealed to both commercial and critical audiences. The most popular compositions of Cortes capture Paris in all her splendor, whether it be depicting the somber snowfall descending on a sleepy corner of the city, or the rain-soaked streets of the Avenue des Champs Elysees. Cortes was obsessed with creating painted poems to his beloved city on the Seine and his use of sun and rain are as expressive as they are beautiful.

How did painter Edouard Cortes get started?

Edouard Cortes was born in the outskirts of Paris in 1882. His father was an immigrant, having worked as a painter for the Spanish Royal Court before arriving in France. Sometime during his teen years, young Edouard became interested in art, eventually enrolling in the famed Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He achieved success at a young age; his first Parisian street scene was accepted into the Salon des Artistes Francais in 1901 and this brought him almost immediate fame and recognition. Eventually, Cortes would fight in the First World War, but would come back to Paris to continue painting up until his death in 1969.
