Biography:
A major figure in the Tonalist Movement, Charles Warren Eaton painted intimate, evocative landscapes in New Jersey, New England, and Europe. Born in Albany, New York, he studied at the National Academy of Design and the Art Students League in New York City. A trip to Europe in 1886 provided Eaton with the opportunity to study contemporary art, in particular the work of Jean-François Millet and the Barbizon School. However, it was the fellow New York painter George Inness, a devotee of the Barbizon style and a leading practitioner of Tonalism, who most greatly influenced Eaton's atmospheric aesthetic. Whether working in Bloomfield, New Jersey, Colebrook, Connecticut, or Montigny, France, Eaton perfected his signature theme: a grove of trees silhouetted against a sunset or a moonlit sky.

His paintings can be seen in numerous public collections nationwide, including the Brooklyn Museum of Art; Columbus Museum of Art, Ohio; Indiana State Museum, Indianapolis; Montclair Art Museum, New Jersey; San Diego Museum of Art; Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington, D.C.; and University of Michigan Museum of Art, Ann Arbor.
