Biography:The sought-after, fun-loving husband-wife team, Ray and Charles Eames are thought to be the most influential designers of the 20th century. The power couple teamed with Hermann Miller in the 60s to mass produce their affordable, utilitarian designs, such as the Management and Executive chairs. Their designs have created the aesthetic the world is accustomed to today. The couple met at Cranbrook Academy in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, Charles was working and Ray was studying painting. They were married in 1941 and moved to California. During WWII the Eames were commissioned by the US Navy to use their newly created molded plywood technique to create splints, stretchers and glider shells. After WWII, they were finally able to work through their chair designs with use of molded plywood, and fiberglass-reinforced plastic. Their furniture was geared towards the new American middleclass of the 1940s and 50s, it was easily produced and readily available through Herman Miller.
