Frantisek Drtikol (Czech, 1883-1961)
Also known as: Frantisek Dritikol
Birth Place: BohemiaBiography:
In 1901, Dritikol enrolled at the School of Apprentice and Laboratory Photography in Munich where he graduated with honors. He opened a commercial studio in his home town which failed. In 1910 he moved to Prague Working. Dritkol began photographing the nude and worked in the complicated noble print process (bromoil, coal, and multi-color pigment) for which he is recognized today. In 1913 he made portraits of famous Czech personalities. In 1914, he was blinded in one eye while serving in the Austrian-Hungarian Army. In 1920, under the influence of his wife, a dancer, he began to stage dynamic images that accentuated movement and form. With the depression of the 1930s, he could not afford models and so made paper cut-outs and arranged them to in ways reminiscent of his nude photography. Neglected by the country of his birth and dying in obscurity, Dritikol is recognized today as one of the leading contributors of Czech photography.
