Birth Place: Baltimore, Maryland
Biography:
Derrick Adams is an American visual artist whose interdisciplinary work in painting, collage, sculpture, and installation explores Black life in the United States and the ways popular imagery and design shape identity. Born in Baltimore in 1970, Adams developed a practice that draws as readily from graphic design, architecture, and mass media as from art-historical sources. He earned a BFA from Pratt Institute (1996) and an MFA from Columbia University (2003), training that helped establish the formal structure behind his bold, graphic compositions. Across the 2010s, Adams became known for crisp silhouettes, flattened space, and vivid patterning, often built through collage and assemblage. Series such as Deconstruction Worker and Floaters highlight his interest in structure and everyday pleasure, pairing visual immediacy with layered cultural reference. His work has been presented in museum contexts, including Derrick Adams: Sanctuary at the Museum of Arts and Design, and he has received recognition such as the Louis Comfort Tiffany Award and the Studio Museum in Harlem’s Joyce Alexander Wein Artist Prize. He has also taught in higher education and his work is held in major public collections.
