Dennis Hopper (American, 1936-2010)
Birth Place: Kansas (United States)
Many are familiar with Dennis Hopper as an actor in films such as Apocalypse Now, Hoosiers, and Easy Rider. However, Mr. Hopper’s artistic pursuits stepped beyond the limits of the big screen and ventured into fields such as photography, painting, and sculpture.
While the pursuit of art had always been an interest of Hopper’s, the bulk of his artistic work had its start in the mid to late 1960’s. Much of Hopper’s previous work was lost in a 1961 fire which took his home and artwork. After this period, Hopper began to rebuild his portfolio, this time with striking photos of individuals such as Martin Luther King Jr. and with more personal photos of his celebrity acquaintances.
After meeting Andy Warhol in 1963, Hopper became fascinated with Pop Art and the idea of found art. Frequently, Hopper would acquire objects such as hotel and road signs and transform them into his own form of sculpture. Oftentimes, these sculptures used automobile and oil imagery as their foundation.
Throughout all of this, Hopper was also pursuing his passion for painting. His style ranged from abstract impressionism to photorealism, and was often inspired by his work in film and photography. These works explored the concept of depth-of-field and flatness, and have been considered to be an attempt to reconcile the abstract and the real.
In 2010, 74-year-old Hopper died due to complications from prostate cancer. He left behind him a prolific body of work which showed the extent his artistic versatility and capacity.
