David Hockney (British, b.b. 1937)
Birth Place: Bedford (Bedfordshire, England, United Kingdom)
David Hockney was born in Bradford, England in 1937 and became one of the most influential modern artists of the 20th century. He moved to the U.S. in the 1960s and was famous for his paintings of Southern California swimming pools.
In 1953, Hockney studied art at the Bradford College of Art. He later attended the Royal College of Art in London, where he began to study modern styles of painting such as abstract expressionism. While still a student, he was able to sell paintings and won several prizes.
Although raised in England, Hockney became enamored with Hollywood at a young age. This was partly due to his love of movies, which he frequently watched with his father. He moved to Los Angeles in 1966, where he began to paint the swimming pools that he became famous for. His early style was expressionistic, which is evident in paintings such as A Bigger Splash. Some of his later paintings were considered more realist in style, but Hockney actually developed a unique style of his own.
Hockney is an important figure in the Pop Art movement of the 1960s, and his work appears in many modern art museums such as the Museum of Modern Art in New York, Tate Gallery in London, Art Institute of Chicago, Museum of Contemporary Art in Tokyo and many others. In addition to paintings, Hockney also created collages made out of photographs. He called this style of collage a joiner. He was just as fond of photography as painting, so it was natural for him to combine these forms.
Hockney’s work continued to evolve, and he has always made use of the latest technology. His work has made use of devices ranging from laser printers to fax machines. More recently, he has created computer paintings using iPads and iPhones. Hockney was recently voted the most influential British artist of the 20th century.
