Henrique Alvim Correa (Brazilian, 1876-1910)

Art

Birth Place: Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Biography:

Who was painter Henrique Alvim Correa?

Henrique Alvim Correa was a turn-of-the-last-century illustrator whose work on H.G. Well’s War of the Worlds made him one of the first science fiction artists. Because of this success, it would appear in books translated into Dutch, German, French, Russian, Italian, and many others. While he lived most of his life in obscurity, his images are known the world over. That said, Correa would never have any sort of name recognition until long after his death.

It would be Wells himself who ultimately approved the images that Correa made for his work. Correa would bring several drawings to London (unsolicited) to show them to the author who was so impressed that he asked Correa to illustrate a special edition of War of the Worlds. While he died young from a TB infection, Correa left a legacy of great science fiction art as well as several erotic drawings that were published under the pseudonym Henri Lemort.

What kind of art does Henrique Alvim Correa make?

In his short life, Henrique Alvim Correa focused on science fiction illustrations and erotic art. His pencil and ink illustrations are stark -- dark pieces that seem to jump off the page with menace and otherworldly mystery. His mastery of the form is wholly evident in a series of pencil and ink illustrations for a special edition of H.G. Well’s War of the Worlds. These drawings still hold up today -- the carnage and violence full of a unique eye for movement and dynamic lighting. The result is drawings that are still as visceral in the 21st century as they were at the dawn of the century they were drawn.

How did painter Henrique Alvim Correa get started?

Henrique Alvim Correa was born to a wealthy family in Brazil in 1876. His family moved to Spain when Correa was just 16 years old, but eventually settled in Paris two years later. Correa exhibited artistic impulses at an early age and started his art instructor under the famed painter, Edouard Detaille. After a hasty marriage to the 17-year-old daughter of famed book engraver, Charles Barbant, the couple moved to Brussels where Correa had to find commercial work making advertisements and house painting when other work dried up. He finally opened his studio in 1900, hustling for work until his unsolicited drawings for H.G. Wells were approved by the artist and garnered him a small amount of fame. He died soon after.

How much are Henrique Alvim Correa’s drawings worth?

Henrique Alvim Correa’s drawings and illustrations are worth anywhere from a few thousand up to around $25,000 for his best-known works. The highest price ever paid for a Henrique Alvim Correa piece was $32,500 for the illustration Martian Emerges (1903) on May 14th, 2015. It was sold by Heritage Auctions.
