Clark Hulings (American, 1922-2011)

Clark Hulings is a western artist whose style transcends the traditional boundaries of Western Art. Having spent much of his childhood in Spain, Hulings was influenced by its rich culture and vibrant images. These early impressions would later provide inspiration for his painting. After studying at the Art Students League in New York, Hulings pursued a degree in physics and moved to New Mexico to work for the Manhattan Project. His poor health kept him from taking the job, but the brilliant New Mexico light made a lasting impact on the artist. Returning to New York, Hulings went on to a career in illustration and eventually returned to Santa Fe to paint full-time. Hulings is a realist painter whose mastery of light illuminates the details of his canvases. He meticulously renders the strong contrasts between light and dark as cast by a midday sun. His subject matter ranges from genre scenes to Spanish markets to quiet streets in colonial Mexico.
