Sculptures

Also known as:  Javacheff, Christo; Javacheff, Christo Vladimirov; Javatcheff, Christo; Christo Vladimirov Javacheff

Birth Place: Gabrovo (Lovech region, Bulgaria)

Biography:
Their first collaboration was in 1961 when they wrapped barrels in canvas on the wharves of Cologne, Germany. The following year, Christo and Jeanne-Claude erected oil barrels in a narrow street near the Seine River, calling the work Rideau de Fer, a protest against the recently erected Berlin Wall.

Subsequent major works include Valley Curtain, immense cloth sheets suspended across a Rocky Mountain valley in 1970; wrapping the Reichstag in Berlin in cloth; Surrounded Miami Islands, 1983; and wrapping the Pont-Neuf in Paris in 1985.

Christo and his wife were planning a controversial work across the Arkansas River at the time of Jeanne-Claude's death on Nov. 18, 2009, as the result of a brain aneurysm.

The artist has plans for erecting a trapezoidal sculpture, Maraba, 100 miles from Abu Dhabi, constructing it of 400,000 oil barrels.
