Biography:
Who is artist Sandra Chevrier?
Sandra Chevrier is a Montreal-based painter, muralist, and mixed media artist whose work explores womanhood, society, and the breadth of life experience. Calling herself a “gaze collector” much of Chevrier’s early work focused on eyes, but later has come to encompass superheroes, femininity, and social justice. It was during her Cages series that Chevrier became an international sensation. Galleries continue to exhibit these pieces and notable fans include the musician Alicia Keys, who happens to own several Chevrier pieces. Chevrier is also a muralist, most recently having worked with Shepard Fairey on a 12 story mural in Austin, Texas.
These days Chevrier is a hot commodity in the art world. After her debut at Art Basel Miami Beach in 2014, Chevrier’s pieces have been exhibited in some of the most sought-after galleries for young artists. This includes the Mirus Gallery, MOAH, StolenSpace Gallery, and the Olympic Stadium in Berlin.
What kind of art does Sandra Chevrier make?
Sandra Chevrier is a mixed media artist, painter, and muralist. Her early work centered on solely the eyes, but has more recently expanded. Since 2014 she has produced her “Cages” series, riffing on the idea of the superhero mask. In these works, Chevrier makes collages of comic book prints to conceal the faces of “idealized” women. This series has proven to be extremely popular, helping the young artist to make a name for herself during Art Basel Miami Beach in 2014. Chevrier has capitalized on this momentum by producing a stunning body of work, from a large-scale 12-story mural in Austin to continued experimentation in the mixed media world. Chevrier is one of our most exciting young artists. Her vibrant, beautiful work is always heartfelt, provocative, and honest. It’s no wonder she’s risen so far so fast.
